Taobao vs 1688: Compare MOQ, Unit Price and Total Cost
Neither Taobao nor 1688 is automatically cheaper for your order. First establish that the two sellers offer the same specification, then compare the amount you must actually buy and pay. The lowest headline unit price is useful only if it applies to your chosen option and quantity.
Why prices on the two platforms can look different
Alibaba describes Taobao as a retail marketplace and 1688 as a domestic wholesale marketplace that also serves smaller businesses and consumers. Those roles explain why quantity is a useful comparison field; they do not establish a universal minimum order or a guaranteed saving. Read each actual offer.
For a single T-shirt, a seller willing to supply one piece may fit your needs better than a cheaper batch offer. For five matching pieces, a quantity tier may become relevant. The decision changes with your required quantity, so write that number down before comparing prices.
Match the offer before comparing the price

These Chinese labels are reading aids, not promises that every listing offers those arrangements. Two pages sharing a thumbnail are still unproven equivalents. If one seller omits fabric composition or dimensions, ask for those details before using it as a cheaper substitute.
Worked example: one piece versus five pieces
The following numbers are invented solely to show the calculation. They are not current Taobao or 1688 prices. Assume the specifications match, domestic freight is per order, and seller B allows one piece at its first tier.

At one piece, B saves ¥11 in this example. At five, B saves ¥121. But if B instead requires five pieces, you must spend ¥287 even when you need only one. That is ¥199 more cash than A’s single-piece order. Dividing ¥287 by five gives ¥57.40 per piece; it does not make the four unwanted pieces free.
If five friends genuinely need the five pieces, the batch calculation may be useful. First confirm that their chosen sizes and colors qualify together. If they do not, recalculate using the applicable tier rather than the advertised lowest price.
Compare the payable total without double-counting
Use quantity × applicable unit price + domestic freight as the first subtotal. Then add only the payment, agent and shipping charges that apply to that route. If the quote already includes a charge, do not add it again. Separate the quoted components before treating a small item-price difference as a saving.
International shipping needs a parcel quote; a seller’s domestic freight is not a delivered-to-you price. Keep this unknown visible in the comparison. Different packaging or included accessories can also mean the two orders are no longer equivalent.
What to save before choosing a seller
Keep both source URLs, seller names, the selected options, required quantity, price tier, domestic freight and the date of the quote. Ask for the actual dispatch and return conditions for those offers. Do not transfer one seller’s terms to the other platform.
If either original listing disappears, check the source before paying. If the replacement changes the specification or minimum quantity, start a new comparison. A useful shortlist records a specific offer, not just a picture and a low number.
